The Audition
Playbook.

A playbook for holding auditions that feel less stressful, more thoughtful, and more useful — for the artists showing up, and for the teams making the decisions.

Written from conversations with 200+ dancers and the artistic teams who hire them. Every act ends with a checklist you can tick as you go.

Prelude

Auditions ask a lot from everyone involved. Artists invest time, preparation, money, focus, and trust before they ever step into your studio. Your team is often working with limited time, full schedules, tight budgets, many opinions, and the responsibility of making choices that directly shape the work ahead.

At the same time, the audition works the other way around. It is one of the first moments where artists experience how you communicate, how you organize, how you hold a room, and how you make decisions. The process gives artists a clear signal of what it might feel like to work with you.

This matters beyond the day itself. Artists remember how an audition felt, even when they are not selected. They speak about the process with peers, teachers, agents, and future collaborators. A well-held audition can strengthen trust in your work, your team, and your place in the field.

Not perfect. Not overcomplicated. Just better held.
