Our Approach to AI

Technology should create more opportunities for artists

Opportunity, not identity theft

Technology should create more opportunities for artists, not take their identity away from them.

Lanced is home to portfolios, photographs, performances, videos, resumes and other material that represents years of artistic work. We understand the responsibility that comes with holding that content.

Ownership

Your likeness is yours

We do not generate artificial artists

Lanced is not in the business of generating artificial artists. We do not use the photos, videos, audio or other media you upload to Lanced to train generative AI models designed to recreate people, generate synthetic performers, imitate your likeness, reproduce your voice or create new media based on your artistic identity.

We do not sell or license your media for this purpose.

  • Your face is yours.
  • Your performance is yours.
  • Your artistic identity is yours.
And we intend to keep it that way.
Purpose

So where does AI fit into Lanced?

Helping the right human beings discover one another

We believe AI can be incredibly useful when it helps people find each other.

Thousands of artists, opportunities and applications move through Lanced. The challenge is not creating more artificial content. It is helping the right human beings discover one another more easily.

We are exploring AI-assisted tools that can make discovery, recruitment and hiring more efficient. This may include helping hiring teams search the Lanced network, surfacing artists who match criteria for a particular opportunity, organising large application pools, or highlighting applications that may be relevant for further human review.

These systems may use information artists provide to Lanced, such as profile information, professional experience, skills, resumes, application information and, where appropriate and lawfully implemented, information contained in uploaded media.

But there is an important distinction: AI can help make connections. People make decisions.
Human judgement

Human decisions stay human

Artistic recruitment is deeply human

Artistic recruitment is deeply human. Experience matters. Technique matters. But so do presence, potential, interpretation, chemistry, artistic direction and countless things that cannot and should not be reduced to a single algorithmic score.

Where Lanced uses AI to assist recruitment or candidate discovery, our goal is for it to support human judgement rather than replace it.

We are committed to designing these systems so that hiring teams retain meaningful control, can understand why candidates are being surfaced, can disregard AI recommendations, and can access candidates beyond those recommended by an algorithm.

We do not intend to use AI to autonomously accept or reject artists for opportunities.

Fairness

Fairness has to be designed in

Recruitment technology can reproduce bias

Recruitment technology can reproduce the biases already present in the world around it. We take that risk seriously.

As we develop AI-assisted discovery and recruitment tools, we intend to test and monitor them for unfair outcomes, evaluate the data and criteria that influence recommendations, and build safeguards against systems that systematically disadvantage particular groups.

  • We will not use biometric analysis to infer sensitive characteristics such as ethnicity, religion, political beliefs or sexual orientation from an artist's appearance.
  • We will not use audition videos to infer an artist's emotions or personality for hiring purposes.
  • We will continue to evaluate our systems as technology, regulation and our understanding of responsible AI develop.
Transparency

Transparency over magic

AI should not operate as an invisible judge

AI should not operate as an invisible judge. When AI meaningfully contributes to candidate discovery or recruitment on Lanced, we believe artists and hiring teams should be able to understand that it is being used and what role it plays.

Where appropriate, we will explain why recommendations are being made rather than presenting unexplained rankings or scores as objective truth.

We will also provide ways to question, report or challenge AI-assisted outcomes where appropriate.

Principle

Our direction is simple

Strengthen the creative workforce

We are building Lanced to strengthen the creative workforce, not automate it away.

  • AI can make searching faster.
  • It can make large applicant pools easier to navigate.
  • It can help uncover people who might otherwise be overlooked.
  • It can make connections that previously took hours of searching.

But the person on the other side of that recommendation remains exactly that: a person. That principle will guide how we build AI at Lanced.
